pujo 09 : part 1 – observations

Well, arbit realizations / funda and observations during holidays … no correlations with pujo whatsoever, though !!

  1. Females (of any age) have a natural flair at small talk / bhaat.
  2. I get along quite well with children.
  3. Girls do more jhari mara (sorry, don’t know the english) than boys ( mr. BB’s funda, now happily seconded by me !).
  4. It’s not that people don’t notice me, rather they are somewhat intimidated by my quietness.
  5. ( Batman Begins funda) Don’t fear … use your surroundings.

THE WEEK …

Technically, though it’s only 4 working days, with an extended weekend …

Monday, 10 Aug – The Anticipation … everything’s as usual, getting up early for gym, going to class in 1st half, reinforcing the recent ever-growing habit of bunking classes in 2nd half – today the excuse being playing poker, spending the afternoon trying to do something new on the lattice-graph project with Pocha, then trying to get rid of the guilty conscience by copying class notes throughout the evening, but soon slipping into familiar (read ‘lyaad’) territory by  watching ‘Love aaj Kal’ from tommy’s HDD after dinner, the only twist being some ‘hidden’ things getting copied from the external HDD to my lappie, among them a pdf that’d prove to be an eye-opener in course of the week  …  and what else, … checking mails and a familiar, dal-chawal uninteresting day comes to an end …

Tuesday, 11 Aug – The Initiation … Gym in morning, classes as usual, seeing the 2nd yr juniors mass-bunking classes for organizing Freshers’ in evening, … which comes by in no time, … going to the auditorium with only a hint of a flutter, which turns into a ‘WTF’ as soon as getting into there and taking a seat, with people all around exponentiating my misery asking ‘hey who’s she-hey where’s she-good choice, man’ like comments, my wondering how it happened, as I technically told only ONE person (apart from batchmates, that is) … the fateful moment comes, on stage, people going up like crazy, the DVD gets handed over, … a slight touch …  constant and obvious references throughout her on-stage grilling … the program getting over at a little over 11, … Return to hostel feeling queer, mixed … then, for a change, a little bit of return to normalcy, with Navoneel da, a research scholar, one of the chief architects of my misery this evening, asking me to be a part of a project that would surely be out as a publication when finished … it all ends with reading things like USS from the pdf got from tommy’s hdd …

Wednesday, 12 Aug – The Confusion … As usual, getting up for gym, a tad late today, my funda about front press getting bashed by Haru Daa, the 70+ hulk at the gym, telling it’s not really for your chest, but to build your deltoids … a nagging thought in the brain … what now ?? a knee-jerk reaction, … IGNORE, you’ve got no chance anymore, after what happened last evening … doing that during breakfast … passing the 1st yr classroom on way to our class … trying to be ‘normal’ among different people giving different fundas throughout the day, … a good session of ‘bhaat’ in afternoon … again the pdf, it says something about a certain P.E.A. …  thought I’d experiment, but no chance during dinner, … suggestions and comments still flowing in … tried to study in night, started a bit, but everything drifted away with the shuffled Coldplay playlist …

Thursday, 13 Aug … The Decision (or, is it?) … I don’t know. Honestly, it was the first thing in mind after I got up, went to gym, … for the first time my throat felt dry during a morning workout, … a growing restlessness, again Coldplay, … I can feel something new, some sort of freshness all around the body, my face … it first occurred during the awfully boring class of Diff Eqns … something getting up the throat, even quickening of pulse (I know it’s getting gross, man, it’s too irrational … but that’s how it felt) … a new tautness in the muscles, a confidence that I can do anything … what the hell is it ?? During lunch, … still no chance for the experiment, … but a twist, … the straight line is still not connected, and a third vertex has come into the imaginary plane, … for sure, those signals were unmistakable, surely they’re not random … about the second vertex … damn it, missed a great chance to talk, all due to some goddamn moments of delay …

Weekend … The queer feeling persisted throughout Friday … it’s a new me, definitely, … for the first time I’m longing to return to the hostel for the week, don’t know whether I’ll get the all important ONE chance, … if you understood an iota of what’s happening, wish me luck, … if you didn’t, still do wish, … a novice like me will need loads of that !!

Who says religion isn’t science ??

At this college there was an extra credit question “Is hell endothermic or exothermic”
This is what one kid wrote:

First, we postulate that if souls exist, then they must have some mass.
If they do, then a mole of souls can also have a mass. So, at what rate are souls moving into hell and at what rate are souls leaving? I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving.
As for souls entering hell, lets look at the different religions that exist in the world today. Some of these religions state that if you are not a member of their religion, you will go to hell. Since, there are more than one of these religions and people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that all people and all souls go to hell.
With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in hell to increase exponentially.
Now, we look at the rate of change in volume in hell. Boyle’s Law states that in order for the temperature and pressure in hell to stay the same, the ratio of the mass of souls and volume needs to stay constant.
So, if hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter hell, then the temperature and pressure in hell will increase until all hell breaks loose (i.e.,Hell is exothermic).
Of course, if hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in hell, than the temperature and pressure will drop until hell freezes over (i.e.,Hell is endothermic).
So which is it? If we accept the postulate given by Ms.Therese Banyan during my freshman year, “That it will be a cold night in hell before I go out with you,” and take into account the fact that I still have not succeeded in having a relationship with her, the second case cannot be true. Therefore, hell is exothermic.

The kid was the only one who got credit.

Samit Roy

It happened thus. … People ( means us students, of course !) here are nowadays really excited about a certain facebook game called mafia wars and for that everyone’s sending wholesale lots of friend requests to arbit people who are mafia wars players as well to get them in their own mafia. Thus i got freinds with this guy Junior Roi. Actually i added him after seeing his pic (and the similarity with our batchmate samit) in Haloom’s prof. Samit’s still reluctant to appreciate the similarity, but when i showed it to Roi when he was online he was pretty excited about it :)

… Strange, such an amount of similarity, between two unthinkably distant ethnic people … one an aboriginal New-Zealander, another a bengali who was brought up in Chennai !!

P.S. saw two diametrically opposite films on alternate days. The first one was the much touted CC2C ( arre, Chandni chowk to china re baba !). Most of the times i felt like screaming mad coz i was having to tolerate the unthiknably stupid stuff, thrown in one after another, in search of the elusive bits of Kung-fu ! And the second one, ‘The Prestige’… oh my … what a film ! this Chris Nolan guy’s a genius, man. That twist in the last was unthinkable. To me it felt really grisly to think of what Hugh Jackman’s Angiers did with Tesla’s machine. Really, film ho to aisa.

Windows sucks

WHAT THE HELL.

I got this ‘obnoxious little weed’ called new folder.exe in my PC through my pendrive and now it’s a nice little chaos inside my hard disk, gobbling up my already thin resource of disk-space. It’s so irritating to find how easily a program can infiltrate into the startup setting of such a widespread OS like Windows. Have to do a regedit and erase all traces of the nasty thing from the HDD to get rid of it. Maybe have to format the partitions for that ( and that means another awful lot of headache, copying files back and forth). Certain wise people (whom i previously thought as faancy linux geeks) have long been taking about the virtues of Linux, but now i really feel it. It rocks. It’s great. Amid all the chaos i managed to get my pc to have a dual boot with Ubuntu 7.10 and ok,  now, for the time being at least i can insert my formatted, ‘clean’ pendrive into the comp safely without getting infected !

The last night of October

It was the last night of October …  a long, hard period of silent introspection.

In my hostel room, i’m all by myself, … with a collection of Bengali dramas. Time swept past. First Enrique’s ‘Hero’, then Eminem’s ‘Lose Yourself’, then songs of TZP, Rock on, … i rewinded them again and again.

I really cannot afford to be different. If for no one else, only for you I have to be myself. That’s how i am what i am. It’s gonna be tough. But i’ll do it again, like i’ve been doing for long. Yes,THAT is life.

The Square Root of Three

I fear that I will always be
A lonely number like root three.
A three is all that’s good and right,
Why must my three keep out of sight
Beneath a vicious square-root sign?
I wish instead I were a nine,
For nine could thwart this evil trick
With just some quick arithmetic.
I know I’ll never see the sun.

Such is my reality,
A sad irrationality.
When, hark, just what is this I see?
Another square root of a three
Has quietly come waltzing by,
Together now we multiply
To form a number we prefer,
Rejoicing as an integer
We break free from our mortal bonds
And with a wave of magic wands
Our square-root signs become unglued,
And love for me has been renewed.

(This beautiful poem appeared in the film ‘Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay’.)

Arbit PJ …

This is a movie, consisting of 4 scenes.

Scene 1 ::

A mule. The camera hovers around it, showing it from different views … left, right, front, back, top, bottom, 36 kinds of angles … continues for five munutes …

Scene 2 ::

Pitch dark. You can see nothing. Maybe the camera hovers, but you can hardly make out anything … another five minutes …

Scene 3 ::

Wait ! There’s something coming out of the dark, but so far away it is to make out … AHA, this is someone wearing an overcoat and a brim hat … but who ? Who ? who ? Can’t make out. But it’s coming nearer and nearer, soon the mystery’ll unfold … comes near for another five munutes …

Scene 4 :: ( hold on to your breaths, this is THE CLIMAX … )

The overcoat stumbles, and so does the brim hat !! Out comes ……
a key, a scissor, and … a packet of Darjelling tea-leaves.
and …
And ……
AND ………
the mule tore the packet and ate all the tea-leaves.

THE END

Amateurish musings

My first post on Chess.
Statutory warning :    I am an avowed amateur player !

I played this game almost three yrs ago, in my 10th grade. Although the game ( or the opponent ) may not seem ( why ‘may’, it IS NOT ) that mature, but I love this match to rewind again and again for two reasons. First, this is my first victory against any chess program. Second, the wisdom of this game has helped me win many matches on this line. Now I start my every game as white by 1 e4 ( the Polgar style ).
This game is played against a monotonous chess program called ‘KChess’. It knows only to attack. The interface even doesn’t have the option to flip the board ! I scrapped it long ago. Now I play in Chessmaster 9000. To an amateur like me, it’s ‘gola’ ( ISI lingo ! ).
Anyway, the match.

White : Subha (me), Black : KChess.
Opening : French-ish.

1 e4 e6 2 e5 Nc6 3 d4 Bb4+
Why on earth? Fianchettoing it is maybe a good option.

4 c3 Ba5 5 b4 Bb6 6 b5 Nce7 7 Nf3 c6 8 Ng5 f6
Black is trying hard, and my play violates the basic opening principles.

9 Ne4 Bc7
Otherwise the Kt was headed for d6.

10 f4 fxe5 11 fxe5 cxb5 12 Bxb5 a6 13 Bd3
Maintains the advanced pawn and gives white light bishop a good outpost. Typical of the French.

13 … Nd5 14 O-O
Taking control of the dangerously open f-file.

14 … g6
Inexplicable. The program should’ve figured out the oncoming assault.

15 Bg5 Nge7 16 Nf6+ Nxf6 17 exf6 O-O 18 fxe7 Rxf1 19 Qxf1 Qe8 20 Qf6 Bd6
Only line that gives black ‘less’ loss. A mini-zugzwang !

21 Nd2 Bxe7 22 Qxe7 Qxe7 23 Bxe7 1-0
Of course these chess programs don’t resign and it dragged along the game. But it is not worth to mention anymore.
